Hannaford’s Guiding Stars system gets 2nd patent

The Guiding Stars nutrition rating system Hannaford Bros. launched in 2006 has received its second patent, regarding its food nutrition database and the operating system used to score and present nutrition information.

The company’s rating system received its first patent in 2011 for its labeling program and the algorithm it uses to evaluate the nutritional value of a food item in 2011. It received a similar patent for those systems in Canada in 2012.

The company said the rating system is now in use at around 1,700 supermarkets in the U.S. and more than 350 in Quebec and Ontario, Canada.
