Electric cooperative awarded $13.6M over breach of contract
Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative of Union was awarded $13.6 million by a jury on Friday after suing First Wind, now owned by SunEdison, over a breach of contract for a failed transmission line deal.
The Associated Press reported the First Wind was hoping to sell 12.5 miles of power line to the cooperative in 2011, but the deal fell through when questions arose over who would foot the bill for repairs, according to Sigmund Schutz, the cooperative’s attorney.
The defendant wanted the cooperative to purchase insurance in order to avoid liability for possible damage, while the cooperative said the defendant agreed to pay for damages, the AP reported.
The verdict went against First Wind Holdings and TerraForm Power Inc., which operates power plants for SunEdison, according to the AP.
