They hail from all corners of Maine and from industries as diverse as generic drugs and heat-resistant textiles to construction and health care. But the six women we are highlighting in our first Women to Watch recognition have plenty in common: smarts, tenacity and vision that sees over obstacles and the short-term to the long-term rewards of leading well-managed enterprises.

Prompted by national trends that show woman-owned businesses growing at more than twice the rate of all others (23% vs. 9%, according to the SBA), we wondered who was leading that charge in Maine. And, to be frank, a quick perusal of Mainebiz pages reflects scant women in management.

That got us thinking. What were we missing? Where are these women? We sent out the call and more than 200 of you answered, submitting nominations for Women to Watch.

The selection process was grueling, but we think the six women we selected and profile in the next several pages will inspire and impress you. They have us.
