Marine modeling co. to open at BNAS
Houston-based American Bureau of Shipping, a provider of marine and offshore classification services, plans to open at the Brunswick Naval Air Station and create 30 jobs, state and local officials announced yesterday.
Gov. Paul LePage, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and others yesterday said ABS will establish a computer-based ship modeling center at the redeveloped base, known as Brunswick Landing, according to a press release from LePage's office. ABS is a maritime organization that develops and verifies standards for the design, construction and maintenance of marine facilities. The ABS Modeling Center will created computer-aided design, or CAD, models of commercial and military vessels that are used for various analyses. The new center will centralize ABS' modeling work, some of which is done in Texas and some overseas, in one location. ABS selected Brunswick after conducting an assessment of several U.S. cities that serve as maritime hubs. The company plans to become fully operational this summer.
ABS joins a handful of other companies that have opened or are planning to open on the base, including aircraft manufacturer Kestrel Aircraft Co., medical products manufacturer Molnlycke Health Care and IT startup Resilient Communications Corp. The base will be officially decommissioned in May.
