Group opposes Carthage wind farm

Residents in the Carthage area are appealing a proposed $65 million wind farm pitched by Patriot Renewables.

Friends of Maine Mountains last week filed the appeal with the Maine Bureau of Environmental Protection, the Sun Journal reported. The DEP in October issued Massachusetts-based Patriot Renewables, doing business as Saddleback Ridge Wind LLC, a land use permit for the 12-turbine project. The group opposes the project's potential noise and scenic impacts on nearby Mount Blue State Park and Webb Lake.

Friends of Maine Mountains Chairman Chris O'Neil claims the permit refers to $60,000 Saddleback Ridge Wind gave the Department of Conservation and the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands for land protection efforts, and that the DEP failed to hold a public hearing on the proposal.
