Ex-bookkeeper gets jail time for dental office theft

The former bookkeeper of Augusta Orthodontics will spend six months in jail for embezzling $120,000 from the practice over a six-year period.

Celine Davis on Tuesday was sentenced to five years in prison with all but six months suspended as well as probation for three years, according to the Kennebec Journal. She was also ordered to pay the remaining restitution of more than $72,500; she has already paid back nearly $47,000. Davis worked at the office for more than 16 years, and from January 2006 through February 2011 accepted cash payments she then deleted from the computer system. The embezzlement was discovered after a customer complained about an erroneous bill.

Davis, who lives in Lewiston, pleaded guilty in October.
