New England consortium receiving $3.5M for transportation research

A regional consortium in New England that includes the University of Maine is receiving funding from the federal government for transportation research.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is allocating a total of $77 million to 22 facilities known as University Transportation Centers, in which various schools collaborate on research, according to The Associated Press. In all, 121 universities are part of the centers. The centers work with federal agencies on research to promote transportation safety and efficiency. Each consortium will get $3.5 million that they must match with funding from other sources.

UMaine is one of the institutions in the consortium and will be competing for a portion of the money with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, the University of Connecticut and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Editor's note: This story was corrected to reflect that the consortium, not UMaine, received the funding.
