Tribe eyes $120M Washington County wind farm

The Passamaquoddy Tribe of Indian Township and Pleasant Point has partnered with a Midwest energy firm to launch a $120 million wind farm in Washington County.

John Richardson, founder of Native Power LLC, told the Bangor Daily News the tribe would retain 51% ownership in Peskotmuhkati Wind LLC, a partnership with Boise, Idaho-based Exergy Development Group. Eighteen to 50 wind turbines would be located in Unorganized Territory at a decommissioned U.S. Air Force radar site nearly 10 miles north of Columbia Falls. Richardson told the paper the group hopes to generate between 36 and 72 megawatts of electricity on the site. The plan will create 50-100 construction jobs and 15-20 permanent positions, he said.

The tribe is currently conducting an appraisal of the property, expects to complete the purchase and finalize plans for the wind farm by the end of this year.
