MTA to use Lewiston motel site for new park-and-ride

The Maine Turnpike Authority plans to buy a Lewiston motel for $400,000 and at least partially demolish it to make room for a new park-and-ride off exit 80.

The authority this week will close on the former Chalet Motel on Lisbon Street, which is currently closed, with plans to knock at least half of it down to build a park-and-ride lot with up to 150 spaces, according to the Sun Journal. The project is part of a $24 million, four-part overhaul of exit 80 that includes building two new ramps at the site of two existing park-and-ride lots. MTA is studying whether to knock down half the hotel and find a buyer for the remaining 42-room property, which would create 75 parking spots, or demolish the whole property and create 150 spots.

Construction on the ramps could begin this year.
