SPO director resigns after arrest

Following an arrest on a charge of operating under the influence, Maine State Planning Office Acting Director Richard Swanson Jr. resigned yesterday. Gov. Paul LePage's outgoing communications director will fill Swanson's spot.

Swanson was stopped Monday night in Waterville for driving erratically, and his blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit of 0.08, according to the Portland Press Herald. He was released on $700 bail. He told the paper he was asked to submit his resignation and said he was "fired". Swanson, who also served as treasurer of LePage's gubernatorial campaign, had served as acting SPO director since Darryl Brown resigned in November. A plan to eliminate the SPO and move its functions to other departments is in the works.

Peter Rogers, who last week resigned as communications director, will serve as the new acting director of the SPO.
