Shrimp season to end Friday

The New England shrimp season will end Friday, regulators decided, because fishermen have reached this year’s controversial 4.9 million-pound catch limit.

The Atlantic State Marine Fisheries Commission decided Wednesday to halt shrimp fishing for the season, saying haul records show the catch limit has likely already been reached, according to The Associated Press. Regulators initially cut this year’s limit by two-thirds to protect against overfishing, and then approved a 10% increase following complaints from fishermen and processors.

Following yesterday’s news, fishermen and processors again said the shrimp stock is healthy and that ending the season will impact shrimp markets.
