MaineToday names executive editor, interim CEO

MaineToday Media has promoted Portland Press Herald Managing Editor Cliff Schechtman to executive editor of its newspapers and websites. The company also recently made Neil Heyside its interim CEO while it searches for a permanent replacement for Richard Connor, who resigned at the end of last year.

Schechtman will oversee the Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, the Kennebec Journal and the Morning Sentinel, as well as the company's associated websites, according to the Press Herald. He was hired as managing editor in October. Heyside is a senior executive as CRG Partners, a New York City firm that helps media companies restructure. He's worked with MaineToday since last year to develop a business plan to expand its online services. Heyside said the promotion of Schechtman will help the company transition to new technology, according to the Press Herald.

MaineToday last week announced that it reached an agreement with billionaire private equity fund manager Donald Sussman for a $3 million to $4 million capital loan and 5% equity stake with Sussman's firm Maine Values LLC. Sussman, the husband of U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, will also have a seat on the company's board of directors.
