Penobscot Nation gets $1M for wind project

The Penobscot Indian Nation has received $1 million in federal funds for its proposed wind project in Franklin County.

The funding from the U.S. Department of Energy will help the tribe develop engineering designs, complete permitting requirements and identify energy purchasers, according to the Bangor Daily News. The tribe has proposed a 227-megawatt wind farm in Alder Stream Township and partnered with Boston-based Citizens Energy Corp. to study the project’s feasibility, according to that company’s website.

The DOE awarded $6.5 million to 19 energy projects around the country proposed by Native American tribes. The Penobscot Nation’s award was the second-largest.
