December retail sales up 4%

Retail sales in December 2011 grew 3.7% over the same month in 2010, according to the Maine State Planning Office.

Total taxable retail sales in December were $1.76 billion. Building supply sales grew 13.8% in December, which marked the seventh consecutive month of strong growth in that category. Restaurant sales grew 6.8% year-over-year in December, while lodging sales saw a year-over-year decline of 4.4%. Sales in the other retail category, which includes jewelry stores, dry goods stores and gift shops, were up 3.0%. Sales in general merchandise stores, including sales of clothing, furniture and household goods, were flat.

Retail sales for the last three months, October through December, were 4.9% higher than the same three-month period a year ago.
