Wind farm pitched for Penobscot County
A developer called Passadumkeag Windpark LLC has proposed a 14-turbine wind farm in Great Falls Township in Penobscot County. The company hopes to begin construction this year, following state approval.
According to an application submitted to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection last month, the 42-megawatt wind farm would also include construction of a substation in Greenbush. The turbines would be located on Passadumkeag Mountain and overlook the Soponac and West lakes, according to the Bangor Daily News. The DEP has not yet set meeting dates for two public hearings, but the first is expected to happen in the next six weeks. If the wind farm is built, it would be the first in Penobscot County not owned by First Wind.
According to state documents, Passadumkeag Windpark is an entity of Texas-based Quantum Utility Generation, formed in 2010 as an investment fund to develop, acquire and operate energy projects in North America. It has a fund size of $1 billion, with $720 million currently committed. It owns generating facilities in Virginia and Mississippi. Quantum acquired Noble Environmental Power last year, which was the initial owner of Passadumkeag Windpark.
