Popular Portland staple Tony's Donuts is planning to open a second location across the bridge in South Portland this fall.
Owner Rick Fournier recently bought a nearly 1,400-square-foot former Irving's station on Broadway with plans to open a doughnut shop and bakery similar to his existing shop off Congress Street. Fournier said he's just started working on floor plans for the new location, and that he intends to take it slow to make sure it's done right. "I'm not going to rush into it, or spend a lot of money quickly," he told Mainebiz. Doughnuts will be made there as they are at the Portland location.
Tony's has been open since 1965. Fournier said he decided to open a second location because the site was "the perfect spot." He said it's on a main road, close to a high school and growing neighborhoods, and sees lots of foot traffic.
Another doughnut shop recently opened in Portland. The Holy Donut opened last Friday in the former Terroni's Market on Park Avenue, according to the Portland Press Herald.
