DHHS probe uncovers more ineligible benefit recipients

A probe into a Department of Health and Human Services computer error has uncovered another 5,300 people who received MaineCare benefits after they were no longer eligible. That brings the total number of people who mistakenly received benefits to up to 24,300.

A working group made up of government officials and a subcontractor reported the additional erroneous payments in a March 30 summary, according to the Bangor Daily News. The 5,300 people received benefits from Jan. 2 to March 10 of this year. Last month, DHHS announced the computer glitch that allowed ineligible people to get MaineCare benefits since at least 2010; that problem has since been solved. Democratic lawmakers have called for an investigation into DHHS, saying the Republican administration lied about and tried to cover up the billing problem.

The Legislature's appropriations committee on Friday is scheduled to hear an update from the working group. By late April, the group expects to determine a dollar amount for the erroneous payments.
