Two Massachusetts-based companies have stepped in to handle distribution of out-of-state publications to areas in northern and eastern Maine. Last month, Magazines Inc. said distribution would cease because of its pending sale to Hudson-RPM Distributors LLC.
Magazines Inc. said distribution of out-of-state publications like the New York Times would end March 25 for grocery and convenience stores north and east of Augusta. Ralph Foss of Magazines Inc. said Hudson did not want to continue the newspaper segment of the company. However, Hudson and another Massachusetts distributor, Fall River News Co., have now signed on to handle the work, according to the Bangor Daily News. They took up the service March 26. It's unclear if Hudson will continue to handle newspaper distribution once its purchase of Magazines Inc. is finalized.
The Foss family, which owned the bookstore chain Mr. Paperback as well as Magazines Inc., announced last month it would close the bookstores and sell Bangor-based Magazines Inc., which distributed newspapers for 40 years.
