Fireworks store planned for Scarborough's Gateway

A fireworks store scheduled to open in Scarborough in June is touting itself as the state's largest. It's the fourth announced fireworks store in Maine since the sale of fireworks was legalized at the beginning of the year.

Ohio-based Phantom Fireworks is opening the store at The Gateway Shoppes center in Scarborough, joining outdoor retailer Cabela's and other restaurants and shops, according to Current Publishing. The company, which has 54 stores in 14 states, said it chose Scarborough because locating near the outdoor retailer is a new company strategy because their clienteles are similar. The store will open in a building currently home to Haven's Candies and the Thai 9 restaurant, both of which will close for about a month and then relocate to new spaces in the complex.

Maine-based Pyro City in March opened the first fireworks store in Manchester, and opened a second location in Edgecomb in April. It also plans to open a third in Winslow by mid-May.
