First female U.S. District Court judge named
For the first time in Maine, a woman has been made a U.S. District Court judge. Nancy Torresen was sworn in yesterday as the state's 17th U.S. District Court judge, replacing Judge D. Brock Hornby, who has moved up to senior status.
Torresen is a former assistant U.S. attorney who handled homicide appeals in the Maine Attorney General's office, according to the Portland Press Herald. Her appointment was confirmed unanimously by the Senate in October. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several prominent women in the judicial profession, including Sandra Lynch, the fist woman to be chief judge of the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals; Magistrate Judge Margaret Kravchuk, the first woman federal judge in Maine; and former U.S. Attorney Paula Silsby, the first woman to hold that job in Maine. Other speakers included former Sen. George Mitchell and all four members of Maine's congressional delegation.
