A southern Maine restaurant owner and tour boat captain has proposed a water taxi to ferry people between Kittery and Portsmouth while a new Memorial Bridge is under construction. Kittery town officials are working with Neil Odams to find a downtown site for the taxi to operate.
Odams told Seacoast Online he's talking with property owners near the town's dock in Wallingford Square to see if a ramp can be temporarily installed to handle passengers. He said a water taxi would help businesses on both sides of the Piscataqua River that otherwise might be hard to get to in the absence of the Memorial Bridge. Odams and his wife own Captain and Patty's restaurant in Kittery Point, and he also runs excursions on his 14-passenger boat. Those rides, however, leave from Kittery Point and take a half-hour one-way, so they aren't ideal for taxi services, he told the paper.
A new bridge to replace the deteriorated Memorial Bridge is expected to open in July 2013.
