Completion of Downeaster platforms celebrated

Ribbon-cutting ceremonies planned for today will mark the completion of new Downeaster train platforms in Brunswick and Freeport. The platforms are part of the passenger train's expansion from Portland to Brunswick.

State and federal transportation officials, including Federal Railroad Administrator Joseph Szabo and Maine Department of Transportation Commissioner David Bernhardt, will attend ceremonies for the two stations, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, which operates the Downeaster, intends to bring passenger rail service to Freeport and Brunswick from Portland this fall, and also build a train maintenance facility in Brunswick. In September, NNEPRA received $21 million for rail improvements from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
