Nurses at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor recently voted in favor of a new, three-year contract that includes raises of between 7% and 13% over the contract period.

According to the Bangor Daily News, 56% of voting nurses in the Maine State Nurses Association, National Nurses Organizing Committee and National Nurses United approved the contract. The unions represent about 850 registered nurses at the hospital. Nurses will receive at least a 3% raise this year, a 2% raise the next year and another 2% raise in the third year, though nurses higher in the pay scale will receive greater increases. The contract also addresses their concern about safety in the emergency room by requiring a metal detector, the paper reported.

Union members last year approved a one-year contract following eight months of negotiations, one strike and a lockout. That contract expired earlier this month.

EMMC's board of trustees must still approve the contract, which is expected in the next couple days.
