A former employee of Healthcare Charities in Bangor has been indicted for allegedly stealing $56,000 from the nonprofit, which is an affiliate of Brewer-based Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems.
Laurena Cunningham, 46, of Bangor, was indicted yesterday by a Penobscot County grand jury for theft by unauthorized taking, according to the Bangor Daily News. Cunningham, who worked in a clerical position, allegedly diverted smaller charitable donations for personal use between November 2011 and March 2012. The donations were supposed to be used for wellness, patient care and education programs. Healthcare Charities in March discovered the missing funds and made a public announcement about the theft.
Cunningham faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine and restitution if convicted, according to the paper. Healthcare Charities said it planned to try to recover the stolen money.
Healthcare Charities has instituted new internal protocols to protect against future theft, and will also perform background checks on all new employees. It raises $10 million-$15 million annually to benefit EMHS organizations, including Eastern Maine Medical Center. It has 21 employees.
