The Portland International Jetport has received LEED gold certification, making it the second commercial airport in the country to receive that environmentally friendly distinction. Jetport and city officials celebrated the certification at a news conference yesterday morning.

Green features at the jetport include the state's largest geothermal heating and cooling system and materials sourced from within 500 miles of Portland, according to the Bangor Daily News. Jetport Director Paul Bradbury said the geothermal system saves the jetport 50,000 gallons of fuel a year, resulting in savings of $150,000. The system was funded largely by a $3 million federal aviation grant. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a program of the U.S. Green Building Council. A new city ordinance requires all major construction projects to receive LEED certification, according to the paper.

The jetport last year unveiled a $75 million expansion that included a new terminal, expanded security checkpoints and a sky bridge between the terminal and parking.
