A South Portland-based developer is planning a 65,000-square-foot retail plaza off Stillwater Avenue in Bangor and has nailed down one tenant -- a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant. Stillwater Crossing LLC said the $4.5 million project could create up to 200 full-time retail jobs.
Stillwater acquired the rest of a 99-year lease on the property previously held by Supervalu, the parent company of Shaw's Supermarket, whose plan for a store there fell through in 2008, according to the Bangor Daily News. There are 94 years left on the lease, and the property is owned by the estate of the original developer, Bud Grant.
Vincent Maietta, principal owner and developer for Stillwater, said the current plan includes 18 to 24 businesses that could include retail and office space. Maietta is also vice president of Maietta Construction, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July 2010. The company reorganized and emerged from bankruptcy in May 2011.
The Bangor Planning Board and City Council must still approve the plan, but construction could happen quickly because Shaw's previously built much of the site's infrastructure before abandoning its plan. Construction could happen as early as September or October, and a Buffalo Wild Wings spokesman said he hoped to open by Thanksgiving.
