Amtrak's eTicket program goes national

An eTicket program piloted on Downeaster passenger train routes between Portland and Boston has proven to be so successful it's now being offered to all trains within Amtrak's national network.

In announcing the expanded eTicket program on Monday, Amtrak cited shorter lines at ticket counters, fewer tickets sold onboard trains and fewer claims of lost tickets as among the benefits seen during the trial run launched last year on the Downeaster route.

Passengers using eTickets are able to skip the line at the ticket window and go straight to the gate by printing their tickets anywhere or by using a smartphone to present the eTicket to the conductor, according to Amtrak's announcement.
