Augusta's City Council will consider on Thursday a proposal for the city to intervene in the dispute between Summit Natural Gas and Maine Natural Gas over building a natural gas pipeline for the Kennebec Valley region.

As reported by Mainebiz last month, Summit is appealing the state's decision to pick Maine Natural Gas as its natural gas provider for state buildings in Augusta, saying the state's decision could jeopardize Summit's plans for a pipeline from Richmond to Madison. Without the service to Augusta, which makes up about 25% of the project, its pipeline extension isn't feasible, Summit said in its appeal.

The Kennebec Journal today reported the proposal put forth by Augusta City Manager William Bridgeo would urge the state to "redo this bid process and redo the conditions to put a stronger emphasis on the successful company building out a natural gas infrastructure" to serve the entire Kennebec Valley, not just state facilities.

Bridgeo told the KJ that intervenor status would allow the city to add its voice to the state's review process.
