Hotelier David Witham is a partner in a proposed 100-room hotel planned for the site of the former Summit House nursing home in Bar Harbor, which has been vacant since May 2003.
According to The Mt. Desert Islander, property owner Linda Shelton, doing business as DBL Enterprises, is partnering with Witham to redevelop the property. An application for the project was submitted to the Bar Harbor planning department in late July, the newspaper reported.
Witham, through his company, Witham Family Properties, purchased the Bar Harbor Hotel in January and has been embroiled in a legal battle with rival hotelier Tom Walsh, whose company, Ocean Properties, opened in July the $12 million The West Street Hotel in Bar Harbor. Witham's legal challenge of the town's approval of that project is pending in Hancock County Superior Court.
Witham's company also recently bought the Comfort Inn in South Portland, the Hampton Inn in Saco and the Comfort Inn in Danvers, Mass. Witham controls more than 1,000 hotel rooms in Hancock County, and the properties have a combined value of more than $50 million.
Assuming planning board approval of the project, construction of the proposed four-story hotel could begin as early as the fall or winter of this year, the newspaper reported. Opechee Construction of Belmont, N.H., is the general contractor.
