Lawmakers nix Casella probe

The Legislature's Government Oversight Committee has rejected calls for an investigation into Casella Waste System's Inc. operational practices at its Juniper Ridge Landfill in Old Town.

Instead of launching a probe into Casella's operational practices by the Office of Program Evaluation and Governmental Accountability, lawmakers on the panel decided it would be best for the public's concerns about Casella to be reviewed by the Environment and Natural Resources Committee when the next Legislature convenes in January, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network.

In April, a subsidiary of Casella Waste Systems Inc. filed a petition with state regulators for an $11 million-$13.5 million gas pipeline from Juniper Ridge Landfill to the University of Maine in Orono. The pipeline would send methane gas from the landfill to UMaine to run boilers and heat campus buildings.

In recent months, Vermont-based Casella Waste Systems Inc. has submitted plans to build a $4 million recycling facility at the Lewiston landfill on River Road and signed a purchase-and-sales agreement to sell its Maine Energy Recovery Co. facility in Biddeford. Biddeford officials have agreed to pay the solid waste management company $6.65 million over 20 years, enter into a new 10-year waste-handling agreement and a new 10-year recycling collection agreement.
