LePage trade mission heads to China

Gov. LePage is scheduled to make his first overseas trip as Maine's top official this weekend with a trade mission to China.

Administration officials on Tuesday announced the weeklong trip in a press release, which will include Maine business professionals in industries including medical products, biotechnology, wood and seafood. Academic recruiters and government representatives will also be along for the trip.

The group is set to leave Saturday for stops that include Hong Kong and Shanghai. LePage said in the release that the trip is about boosting export trade from Maine, making investment contacts and expanding outreach from Maine's educational institutions to the country.

Janine Bisaillon-Cary, president of the Maine International Trade Center, told the news service that China is Maine's third-largest export market, totaling around $275 million in exports last year.

Around 1,000 Chinese students are currently enrolled in Maine schools.
