The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is considering a petition by the Center for Environmental Science, Advocacy and Reliability to list baby eels, called elvers, under the Endangered Species Act, which could shut down that fishery altogether. In 2012, skyrocketing prices made elvers Maine's second most valuable fishery, bringing in around $40M based on preliminary estimates.
