Shaw's expands sustainable fish effort

Shaw's Supermarkets is expanding the sustainable seafood program it launched a year ago with the addition of several new species.

Shaw's now offers 18 products in its fresh case that are certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, the world's leading certification and eco-labeling program for sustainable seafood, or verified through the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, a nonprofit marine science center based in Portland.

According to a company press release, Shaw's 169 store locations in Maine and the four other New England states have added fresh swordfish steaks, perch, cod and sockeye salmon filets and frozen-at-sea haddock and New England-style haddock fillets to its lineup of "fresh case" products.

Since announcing the initiative last September, Shaw's has continued to work closely with the MSC and GMRI, as well as North Coast Seafood – its single seafood supplier – to grow its sustainable seafood sourcing program.

Shaw's Supermarkets is based in West Bridgewater, Mass. In May, the competing Scarborough-based Hannaford Supermarkets announced a similar sustainability policy for all seafood products it sells, the culmination of more than three years of research and prep work.

The policy applies to more than 2,500 products, including fresh seafood, and frozen, packaged and canned items in which the main ingredient is seafood. Hannaford's 150 suppliers are required to demonstrate that they are harvesting seafood from fisheries governed by science-based management plans.
