The first ship of the season to dock at Portland's $6 million megaberth – the city's largest dock, which was completed last summer – arrived this weekend, carrying around 2,200 passengers and 900 crew members, according to the Associated Press.
Royal Caribbean's 990-foot "Enchantment of the Seas" was the second ship to arrive this weekend to start the late summer and fall cruise season. The American Independence arrived in Portland on Friday, according to WGME.
Heading into this cruise ship season, city officials told the Portland Press Herald that they expected a drop of nearly 20,000 passengers over last year.
And cruise liners aren't the only large ships set for Portland this month. The Press Herald also reported that one of the world's largest yachts – with 82 rooms – is set to dock at the Maine State Pier this month.
The five-story "Rising Sun" was built for Oracle co-founder and CEO Larry Ellison and was later purchased by billionaire DreamWorks Studios founder David Geffen.
