Telecom cos. small and large go to fiber optics

The Aurora-based Union River Telephone Co. recently became the first in the state to replace all of the company's copper phone lines with fiberoptic cables, linking 1,200 customers in Aurora, Otis and Beddington to phone and data connections.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the company hopes the move will bolster it against a future where more customers are leaving wired phone connections but still have a need for a data service.

In downtown Bangor and elsewhere, the paper also reported that Time Warner Cable is also expanding its fiberoptic cable reach, spending over $1 million for upgrades last year and planning $5 million in Maine investments this year to add more than 150 miles to its 12,000-mile network of fiberoptic and coaxial cable.

Of that investment, $2 million will be directed toward expanding service for commercial customers.
