Downeaster begins Brunswick, Freeport service

The Amtrak Downeaster will make its first operational run to Freeport and Brunswick today with celebratory stops in both towns.

The Associated Press reported that regular Amtrak service to Freeport and Brunswick, with two daily round trips, will begin Friday.

Today, the first 250 train riders will include Amtrak Vice President Joe McHugh, Patricia Quinn of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority and state transportation commissioners from Maine and New Hampshire.

Maine rail officials project the expansion will add 36,000 passengers to the growing Boston-to-Maine service that hit a record ridership of 528,292 last year.
