Woods drops Senate bid

Independent candidate Steve Woods has formally withdrawn his candidacy for the U.S. Senate and endorsed fellow Independent Angus King.

In a press release, the Yarmouth town councilor and TideSmart Global president and CEO said his decision comes after a private June 13 meeting with King where both came to agreement that if either candidate was trailing the other by 10 or more points, the trailing candidate would drop his bid and endorse the other.

Woods, a part owner of the Maine Red Claws basketball team, told the Bangor Daily News about those intentions in June but did not formally announce his plans to drop out of the race until Saturday, during a televised debate in Lewiston.

Woods' own endorsements during the campaign included a nod from 1970s TV star and renown mentalist, The Amazing Kreskin, according to the BDN.
