Orono call center hiring 400 after FEMA contract

The Atlanta-based call center outsourcing firm, Nexxlinx, is looking to hire 400 at its Orono call center after receiving a federal contract to handle disaster-assistance calls in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

In a press release, the Maine Department of Labor, through the Bureau of Employment Services, reported it is helping Nexxlinx as the company begins to recruit those employees.

The company was awarded the contract through the Federal Emergency Management agency Tuesday to be the direct telephone point of contact for disaster applicants registering for federal disaster assistance and for callers seeking referrals to a variety of relief programs following the hurricane that caused up to $50 billion in damage across the East Coast, according to The Associated Press.

The 400 jobs are expected to last anywhere from two weeks to six months.

Hiring for those positions — at about $15.40 an hour for agents and $18 to $20 an hour for supervisors — is ongoing and immediate, according to a company press release, and is happening through the Bangor CareerCenter, the Maine Job Bank and the company's website at nexxlinx.com.
