Jackson Lab buys former Lowe's

Jackson Lab has completed its purchase of a 140,000-square-foot former Lowe's building in Ellsworth, where the nonprofit lab plans to locate warehousing, administration and production of lab mice, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The Bar Harbor-based lab, with locations in California and plans for a new facility in Connecticut, recently began breeding a new type of mouse with no immune system.

Researchers told Mainebiz that the new type of mouse aims to allow physicians to test new and personalized cancer treatments.

Annually, the lab breeds 2.7 million lab mice that it provides to thousands of research facilities around the world.

The Ellsworth Lowe's has been vacant since January 2008 as part of the hardware chain's closure of 19 stores across the country.
