ME boat built to take on world speed record

The owner of a boat built in Thomaston is looking to break a world speed record for circumnavigating the globe.

WCSH6 reported that boatbuilder Lyman Morse built the 63-foot vessel, "The Kiwi Spirit," for Stanley Paris, who hopes to break a record for nonstop solo circumnavigation set by another Mainer, Dodge Morgan, who was the first to complete the sailing feat in 1986.

Morgan's record stands at 150 days. Paris hopes he can make the trip, which he would start at the age of 76, in 120 days.

Without the speed record, completion of the voyage would make Paris the oldest person to achieve a solo round-the-world sailing trip.
