Former EMHS employee pleads guilty to filching $56,000

A Bangor woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing around $56,000 from a charitable entity belonging to Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Laurena Cunningham, 47, is scheduled for sentencing next month after pleading guilty to one charge of theft by unauthorized taking.

Cunningham was indicted on that charge in June by a Penobscot County grand jury.

In her role as a courier for donations, she allegedly skimmed a portion of cash donations, substituting the bilked amount with checks she withheld from previous donations.

The nonprofit estimated that $56,183 in donated funds was diverted between November 2011 and March 2012, the paper reported.

Cunningham could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to twice the amount as well as restitution payments.
