New Legislature picks leaders
Reclaiming legislative majorities, Maine's House and Senate Democrats selected new party leadership Tuesday night.
Portland Sen. Justin Alfond was nominated as president of the Senate, where Democrats expect to have a 19-15 advantage, and Berwick Rep. Mark Eves was selected as speaker of the House, where Democrats expect a 89-58 lead, according to the Kennebec Journal.
Democrats are assured of majorities in both chambers but the final slate of legislators headed to Augusta is uncertain due to requests for recounts in nine close races.
In the Senate, Republican leaders have picked Sen. Michael Thibodeau of Winterport as minority leader and Sen. Roger Katz of Augusta as assistant minority leader.
Republican legislators in the House are scheduled to caucus today to pick their top leader from a slate of candidates including Robert Nutting of Oakland, Paul Davis of Sangerville and Ken Fredette of Newport.
