STEM charter school in Portland approved

A charter school focused on science, technology, engineering and math studies received final state approval to move ahead late last week, according to a press release.

The Baxter Academy for Technology and Science is slated to be located at 51 York St. in Portland. The commission can approve opening 10 charter schools over the next decade.

In July, the commission authorized two schools to open this year: the Cornville Regional Charter School and the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences in Hinckley.

Baxter is one of five schools to submit applications this year to the commission. The other is the Fiddlehead School of Arts and Science in Gray.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Baxter Academy had received conditional approval for its Portland school. It was granted final approval from the state.
