State sets intervenor deadline in Casella expansion

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has set a December deadline on applications to participate as an intervenor in the case of Casella Waste Systems' plan to expand its Juniper Ridge Landfill.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the department will accept intervenor applications through Dec. 7. Intervenor status allows greater participation in the hearing process, including permission to present evidence and cross examine other parties.

The Juniper Ridge expansion is connected to Casella's plans to shut down its Maine Energy Recovery Co. incinerator in Biddeford, which have generated local controversy and postponed a $6.65 million sale agreement with the town.

Casella plans to transport the waste previously processed in Biddeford to the Juniper Ridge facility in Old Town, though the company said earlier this month that a decision on the Juniper Ridge expansion would not hold up the closure and sale of the Biddeford incinerator.

The opening of intervenor application requests comes in advance of a DEP hearing in the case that is expected to take place early next year.
