Salesman accused of $100K theft

Police believe a former Electrolux vacuum salesman stole between $50,000 and $100,000 from customers in central Maine.

The Bangor Daily News reported that police arrested Anthony McKechnie, 32, recently of Montville, in connection with the thefts.

A company official said Electrolux will refund victims of the crime, in which police allege McKechnie had customers make out checks directly to him and not to the company.

The manager of Augusta's Electrolux office told the paper that the company believes 10 to 12 customers, mostly in the Belfast-Rockland area, were swindled. The manager said that McKechnie was recently fired as an independent contractor for the company after working with Electrolux for three to four years.

The Waldo County Sheriff's Office has charged McKechnie with theft.
