Boat yard expansion progresses

Phineas Sprague Jr., owner of Portland Yacht Services, is closer to moving his boat repair operations to a new Fore River boat yard.

The Portland Press Herald reported that Portland's Planning Board on Tuesday approved Sprague's plan to develop 22 acres along the Fore River, near the Casco Bay Bridge for a boat yard where he plans to work on tugboats, barges and commercial vessels.

Sprague has worked out tentative lease agreements with current landowners for the development he calls Canal Landing, but he will still need permits from the Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Portland Harbor Commission.

Sprague said he plans to continue operating a marina and private event space at Portland Yacht Services but would move all boat repair operations to the new waterfront expansion. He said he hopes to have the expansion finished by September.
