Business regs group drafts recommendations
A state panel tasked with improving Maine's business regulations has identified two recommendations to make to the Legislature next year.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the Maine Regulatory Fairness Board has drafted one recommendation that regulators make appointments with business owners rather than make surprise visits that require an owner or manager to step away from other tasks.
The second recommendation the board has drafted is to provide regulators some form of continuing education to keep them apprised of the most current laws. Such a program could help business owners, by extension, stay on top of new regulations as well.
Secretary of State Charlie Summers, chairman of the fairness board, told the paper that the board wanted to keep its recommendations as specific as possible, though other issues emerged during the public testimony that guided the board's recommendations.
The board's suggestions are currently in draft form and will be submitted for approval at the board's next meeting, which has not yet been scheduled, the paper reported. Those recommendations are due to go to the Legislature by Feb. 1, 2013, as part of a report by Jay Martin, the state's small business advocate.
