Tom's of Maine moves R&D to N.J.
Tom's of Maine has cut seven research positions from its Kennebunk lab as the company shifts research and development to the New Jersey facility of its parent company, Colgate-Palmolive.
In response to an inquiry from Mainebiz, Tom's spokeswoman Susan Dewhirst said in an email that the company announced last week shifting its product research and development resources to the parent company's Global Technology Center in Piscataway, N.J.
Dewhirst said the seven Kennebunk-based researchers will be able to apply for new and open jobs in Piscataway and elsewhere in the company after the Kennebunk lab closes. The company's quality control lab will remain open at the company's manufacturing facility in Sanford.
Dewhirst said that the move does not alter the company's standards for what constitutes natural, sustainable and responsible product development and the company will continue to avoid any product testing on animals, Dewhirst said.
"By creating a focused team of scientists in Piscataway, Tom's of Maine can more readily tap global research, technology and sourcing capabilities to formulate new products consumers seek," Dewhirst wrote.
