Acadia Corp. loses park concessions contract

After 80 years running concessions at Acadia National Park, the Acadia Corp. this week lost its contract with the National Park Service to a New Mexico-based firm.

The Mount Desert Islander reported that National Park Service officials in Philadelphia this week awarded Ortega Family Enterprises the contract to operate the Jordan Pond House and gift shops at Thunder Hole and on Cadillac Mountain.

David Woodside, president and CEO of Acadia Corp., told the paper that the company is still evaluating what the announcement will mean for it, which also operates shops in downtown Bar Harbor. Woodside said the company’s expansion into retail stores downtown was partly out of a concern that the company could eventually lose its park contract.

Acadia Corp. was founded in 1932 with a small stand atop Cadillac Mountain.
