Pot trade group visits beleaguered mill town
A trade group representing medical marijuana growers reached out last week to an estimated 70 potential newcomers to the industry in the town of Lincoln, where a paper mill laid off 200 workers in December.
The Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported Medical Marijuana Caregivers of Maine held an introductory seminar on starting a career as a medical marijuana caregiver in part to reach out to those laid-off workers. Paul McCarrier, the trade group representative leading the seminar, told the network that he thinks the state could support up to another 1,500 medical marijuana caregivers, who are limited to growing cannabis for up to five other people. There are an estimated 15,000 medical marijuana patients in the state, McCarrier said.
The news service reported that a few of the attendees in Lincoln had recently been laid off and were seeking new career options or ways to supplement their household income.
